Trail guide

240 miles, five rides.

Mile markers are the old railroad miles: they start at 26.9 in Machens (the east end, near the Mississippi confluence) and climb to 264.6 at Clinton in the west. Each stretch below is a comfortable one-to-two-day ride with its own character. Check conditions before you go and use the map for trailhead detail.

MILES 26.9 TO 77.7 · MACHENS TO MARTHASVILLE · ~51 MILES

St. Charles & Wine Country

The busiest miles on the trail, and for good reason. Historic St. Charles makes the natural start (Machens, the true terminus, has no services), and the trail rolls southwest past Weldon Spring's conservation lands into the wine towns: Defiance, Matson, Augusta, Dutzow. Weekend crowds thin fast past Defiance. Daniel Boone's family settled this country, and the tasting rooms sit a short climb off the trail. Expect full services and frequent trailheads.

MILES 77.7 TO 143.2 · MARTHASVILLE TO NORTH JEFFERSON · ~66 MILES

Bluffs & River Towns

The quiet heart of the eastern trail. Small towns come at pleasant intervals: Treloar, McKittrick (cross the bridge for Hermann's German old town, wineries, and the Amtrak station), Rhineland, Portland, Mokane, Tebbetts. Between them the trail runs long, shaded miles beneath limestone bluffs with the river alongside. Services are real but spaced out; carry water and check hours ahead in the off season. North Jefferson connects across the river to Jefferson City and its train station.

MILES 143.2 TO 191.8 · NORTH JEFFERSON TO BOONVILLE · ~49 MILES · 36 MILES IN 360

Rocheport Bluffs

If you only ride one stretch, ride this one. From North Jefferson the trail passes Hartsburg (pumpkin country), the river bottoms at Claysville and Easley, Cooper's Landing (riverside camping, food, and the best sunset on the trail), Katfish Katy's at Huntsdale, and the McBaine bur oak country before the showpiece: the bluffs into Rocheport and the 1893 tunnel. Rocheport itself has the cafe-and-bike-shop stop of the trail in Meriwether's. We captured this whole section in street-level 360 in July 2026, so you can preview every mile before you ride it.

MILES 191.8 TO 227.2 · BOONVILLE TO SEDALIA · ~35 MILES

Boonslick Prairie

At Boonville the trail crosses the Missouri on the old Katy lift-bridge approach and says goodbye to the river. The character changes completely: the bottomland shade gives way to open farm country, and the trail climbs gently out of the valley through Pilot Grove and Clifton City. This is the stretch riders underestimate: exposed, quiet, and lovely in the right light. Sedalia greets you with a restored Katy depot and a real railroad town's main street.

MILES 227.2 TO 264.6 · SEDALIA TO CLINTON · ~37 MILES

Sedalia to Clinton

The western miles are pure prairie riding: Green Ridge, Windsor, Calhoun, then Clinton's square. Windsor, at mile 248, is the junction with the Rock Island Spur toward Kansas City, and the town has leaned into being a trail crossroads. Services are the thinnest of the whole route out here, so top off water in Sedalia and Windsor and mind the summer heat: shade is scarce and the wind owns the afternoon.
