The trail runs through the river bottoms for most of its length. When the Missouri approaches flood stage, low sections can go under water and the park closes stretches of trail.

The Katy's surface is crushed limestone over an old railbed. It drains quickly, so a passing shower rarely matters, but sustained rain soaks in and leaves soft, tire-sucking stretches, especially in shaded bottomland miles. We total hourly rainfall over the last 24, 48, and 72 hours at each point:
Good riding little recent rain; expect a firm surface.
Soft spots roughly a quarter inch or more in 24 hours (or slow accumulation over 2 to 3 days); expect occasional soft patches.
Muddy likely over half an inch in 24 hours or an inch plus over two days; expect standing water and soft trail, and give the surface a day to firm up.
River flooding a gauge is at flood stage; bottomland sections may be closed regardless of rain.
